The very concept of Edie Sedgwick is one that deserves ample discussion. To save some precious time, here are a few words on the subject from our good friend Greg: “DC’s Edie Sedgwick is a unique performer that you might say bears little in common with his namesake.  The original Sedgwick was a socialite actress most recognized for starring in Andy Warhol films. The Sedgwick in question purports to be the original’s transgendered reincarnation and is signed, interestingly enough, to legendary Dischord Records.”

He’s not kidding.

Photos: Dead Air Opening feat. Lo Moda, Pläns Pläns, Edie Sedgwick @ the Metro Gallery (2009.02.17)

This past Tuesday night, Sarah Williams and the Metro Gallery opened up the Dead Air Video Exhibit (curated by Kristen Anchor of the Degenerettes). The exhibit is essentially an audiovisual eulogy to what was supposed to be the end-date for analog TV broadcasts. The impending switch to digital has largely been delayed due to inefficiency on the part of institutions, corporations and individuals.

Nonetheless, everyone still celebrated with some great music and interesting exhibits including old clips from AtomicTV and various other channels, including a fairly awesome TV stuck in a table and assorted stacks of TVs broadcasting looped TV clips.

Jeff the Taper was also in attendance.  After the jump, check out some photos from the night.  You can also click each performer’s name to skip to the live audio.

Live Review / Photos: Imperial China, Title Tracks, Edie Sedgwick @ the Black Cat (2009.01.07)

DC’s Edie Sedgwick is a unique performer that you might say bears little in common with his namesake.  The original Sedgwick was a socialite actress most recognized for starring in Andy Warhol films.  

The Sedgwick in question (pictured right) purports to be the original’s transgendered reincarnation and is signed, interestingly enough, to legendary Dischord Records.  Odd until you realize that Sedgwick is a brazen and adventurous pop culture parody act.  

With track titles culled from celebrities and cinema, Sedgwick’s songs are lined with funky, post-punk dance-beats, an undeniable hip-hop swagger and a personality born for performance that ultimately carries the show when the music gets too repetitive. Read the rest…
