In my opinion Alex hits it on the head, but also consider that it's a first album, so I think it's natural to work in some of the tropes you've heard before. And you can identify those tropes in the vast majority of debut albums from any genre.

It's a good first step, but I think the better bands out there eventually merge their own personality with that tradition. Few bands are fully formed from the start.

I like this band a lot. I feel that this album is a little overproduced though. I think I enjoyed the recordings from the EP to the ones from the LP. They are still awesome though. Ra Ra Riot has the same effect on me.

I got into a hot and heavy discussion this past weekend with two talented musician about influence. Both had different views. However, one of them personally admitted a huge debt to shoegaze, though I wouldn't have picked out that influence in his music myself.

I think that so many of the reverb rehashes out now are a couple steps removed from the original source, and the sound suffers. These are straight up rock bands, not sound artist primarily interested in melding melody and texture. Remember the way that Slowdive went, their final album was ambient, if I remember correctly. I don't think Vivian Girls, or the like are going to try that anytime soon.
